    Firstly, this is a fantastic design and a beautiful looking tote bag, made one for my wife yesterday and she loves it. Also, the video itself is easy to follow and very well put together.
    However, for anyone not familiar with making any kind of lined bags, be aware of a mistake in the video at step 7 (4 min 26 seconds) where the stitch lines for the sides of the lining are shown as full along both sides. Please note one side should have a gap left open big enough so the whole thing can be turned inside out, this is stitched later in the video.
    Other than that it's a perfect video - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills. As a result of this video I have subscribed to your channel - fantastic.

      I didn’t notice the turning gap or even think about it on the first one I made until I was sewing the two layers together so I left a gap and turned it through that. I ended up hand sewing the gap closed and it looks ok but I did it correctly on the second one I made and it turned out, literally and figuratively, much better.

    I love this. I really like the way you assembled the pockets. I like to add a bit of embroidery to my bags and this will make it super easy. For those that like written instructions, I have complied it. :) I truly hope this is ok to share - I need written directions to go along with the video.
    Cut 2 pieces for outer layer 18” x 10”
    Cut 2 handles, 4.7” by 40”
    Cut 2 pockets 6” x 7”
    Cut 1 bottom 18” x 13”
    Cut 1 lining 32” x 18”
    Handles, fold fabric in half, then fold in each side to the center fold and sew both sides.
    Pockets, fold top over 2 times and sew to finish top edge.
    Assemble Outer layers: Attach handles and pockets to outer layers. Center pocket with bottom at the bottom edge of outer layer, place handle over each edge of pocket and sew up to about 1/2 inch from top edge, this finishes the pockets and attaches the handles.
    Attach bottom to each outer layer. Top stitch below the seam line to reinforce.
    Make corners (should be 5.5” across), trim off excess fabric.
    Liner: Fold liner in half and sew down each side, leave an opening on one side to turn the bag right-side out after assembling. Make corners (should be 5.5” across), trim off excess fabric.
    Finish: place right sides together and match top edge. Sew around top edge. Turn bag right side out through the side opening. Sew closed the opening and push the liner into the outer bag. Top stitch around the top of the bag.

    In case anyone is wondering about fabric - I bought 1.5m of cotton twill (and 2m of cotton webbing for the handles) and it came out great. I kept making mistakes cutting and had enough fabric left over to recut the pieces properly. Also - the sides look absurdly short when you cut them but once the bottom on it's fine! The bag is about the same dimensions as my 13" macbook with room left over for other stuff. A zipper and inside pockets would be nice additions.

  • @laurend7071
    @laurend7071 Год назад +37

    I just finished making this bag! It turned out amazing, the video was an amazing guide to use for this.
    For anyone looking for the finished size, mine turned out to be:
    17 inches wide
    12 inches tall
    5 inches deep
    I used 1/4 inch and 1/3 inch seam allowance for most of the project, so if you use different seam allowances you’re might turn out a little bigger/ smaller. I chose to use a lightweight fusible interfacing on the lining layer to help give it more structure, and I also added interior pockets.
    Something I would change for next time I make one is to stitch all the way up the straps when adding them to the side panel (around 1:40). It was implied in the video to only stick an inch or so above the pocket, but I think it would look nicer stitched all the way to the top. I don’t love the look of the topstitching at the end going across the handles (around 7:00) so by going all the way up you might be able to avoid that line.
    I definitely recommend using interfacing!! Especially if you’ll be carrying around a laptop and a book or two like me, it helps add more stability and strength to the finished bad. I used it on just the lining layer but plan on adding it to the bottom panel as well next time so that it might stand on its own.
    Otherwise I give this pattern a 10/10!!

    • @callinic999
      @callinic999 3 месяца назад

      I mentioned this is another comment, but stitching the straps all the way to the top of the outer layers before you stich the lining to it will not work for this design. If you want to stitch them all the way up to the top at the end, you should.
      But seriously, don't do it before hand. If you do, when you stitch the lining to the outer layer, you'll be preventing yourself from being able to finish the job. You'll have to cut away the stitching that ends up sewing the straps to themselves on the last step. You NEED that extra space until after it's turned out.
      Trust me, I learned that the hard way.

      Shelly & DIY Sewing, thank you for adding this comment about making sure to leave the turning point in the side seam of the lining, a crucial, necessary step. Leaving the turning point on the side of the lining as opposed to the top edge of the tote's outer shell and lining also allows one to "hide" the stich line to close the lining inside the tote once it has been turned out. It leaves the top edge of the tote uniform, cleanly stitched, and very professional-looking. Excellent tutorial video with impressive results. Amazing, simple, elegant creation and extremely useful. Great success to all your projects!

Important note not to stitch the handles starting right from top to bottom of the panel - start stitching the handle a cm below the top of the panel so that you can fold over the panel to finish the top stitch later. Also would recommend if you are a beginner like me starting with black material/black thread or white/white thread because omg my lines were so wonky haha.

      @@syedaifra4674 I believe about a yard or so of fabric is best. I used a kind of canvas fabric (i believe it was meant for home decor, but it worked) on some, but quilting cotton would also work. Quilting cotton likely wouldn't hold up over time if this is going to be a day to day bag. You can also use interfacing to make it a little thicker/more sturdy. 😊
